An oval diamond is a round brilliant drawn out into an ellipse. It spreads its weight across a longer outline, so a 1 carat oval, about 7.7 by 5.7 mm, looks larger face up than a 1 carat round at 6.5 mm, and it lengthens the finger it sits on. It has no sharp points to chip, and it takes a halo, side stones or a second diamond with ease.
Why choose an oval
- It looks larger. At the same carat weight an oval covers a longer stretch of the finger than a round.
- It lengthens the hand. Set lengthwise along the finger, the oval draws a vertical line that makes fingers look slimmer.
- It is practical. No points to catch or chip, so it suits a ring worn every day.

Long and slim, or soft and wide
The length to width ratio sets the character of an oval. Classic ovals sit between about 1.30 and 1.50: at the lower end the stone reads softer and fuller, at the higher end longer and slimmer, closer to a marquise. Neither is better. Look at a few on the hand and choose the outline that looks like her.
The bow tie, and why cut matters
Many ovals show a darker band across the centre, shaped like a bow tie, where some facets return less light. It comes with elongated shapes; a well cut stone keeps it faint.
