Toi et Moi Rings: Two Diamonds, One Ring, and How to Choose Yours

Three Nivara toi et moi rings: a pear and an oval on an open band, a pear and an emerald cut side by side, and two ovals in halos

Updated 7 October 2026

A toi et moi ring sets two diamonds side by side on one band. The name is French for you and me, and the two stones stand for two people. They can match, two ovals, or contrast, a pear beside an emerald cut. It works as an engagement ring and as a ring she chooses for herself.

What toi et moi means

A solitaire has one stone. A three stone ring has a centre and two companions. A toi et moi has two stones and no centre: neither one is set for the other. That is the whole idea of the ring, two people, each whole, side by side.

The design is often linked to the ring Napoleon Bonaparte gave Josephine de Beauharnais before their wedding in 1796: a pear shaped diamond and a pear shaped sapphire, set side by side on a slim gold band. Our toi et moi rings pair two diamonds. When two stones sit this close, any difference in colour or brightness shows at once, so both are held to one standard: VVS clarity, E colour, ideal cut.

Matched or contrasting

There are two ways to build a toi et moi. A matched pair uses one shape twice, and reads calm and symmetrical. A contrasting pair puts two different shapes together, and the difference between them becomes the design. Contrast is the more personal choice, and it lets each of you choose one shape.

Prices are for 14k gold and move with the gold rate.

Pear and oval

Two long shapes, both cut with brilliant facets, so they sparkle alike. The pear brings a point and a sense of movement; the oval answers it with an even curve.

Toi et Moi ring with a pear and an oval lab grown diamond on an open gold band

Toi et Moi pear and oval, from around ₹52,000. A pear and an oval, each held on one end of an open band that wraps around the finger.

Pear and emerald cut

A curved, pointed brilliant beside a straight edged step cut. The pear sparkles in small flashes; the emerald cut, with its long step facets, shows broad, calm ones.

Toi et Moi emerald and pear, from around ₹60,000. A pear and an emerald cut side by side across a plain gold band, 0.60 carat in all.

Toi et Moi pear and emerald, from around ₹1,42,000. A pear set above an emerald cut, one over the other along the finger, 2.00 carats in all.

Oval and emerald cut

Curves meet corners. Set one above the other, two long shapes keep the ring slim on the finger.

Toi et Moi oval and emerald, from around ₹82,000. An oval above an emerald cut on a slim band, 1.00 carat in all.

Pear and round

The round looks the same from every side, so it steadies the pear beside it. One shape pointed, one perfectly even: the gentlest contrast of all.

Toi et Moi ring with a pear and a round lab grown diamond on an open gold band

Toi et Moi round and pear, from around ₹99,000. A pear and a round on the two ends of an open band, 1.40 carats in all.

Pear and cushion

A cushion is a square with softened corners. Beside a pear it reads soft and a little old world.

Toi et Moi ring with a pear and a cushion cut lab grown diamond on a slim gold band

Toi et Moi pear and cushion, from around ₹81,000. A pear and a cushion cut side by side on a slim band, 1.00 carat in all.

Two of the same shape

Two ovals, two pears or two rounds make a matched pair: symmetrical, calm, and the quietest way to wear the idea.

Toi et Moi ring with two oval lab grown diamonds in halos on a split pave band

Toi et Moi two ovals, from around ₹1,27,000. Two ovals, each in a halo, on a split band lined with small diamonds, 1.80 carats in all.

With halos

A ring of small diamonds around each stone gives both more presence and more light, and makes a modest pair look generous.

Toi et Moi emerald and pear halo, from around ₹1,04,000. An emerald cut and a pear, each framed in its own halo of small diamonds, 1.30 carats in all with the halos.

How big each stone looks

Equal weights do not look equal. Shapes carry their weight differently, so a pear looks longer than an oval of the same carat, and an oval longer than a round. Sizes are approximate.

Carat Round, across Oval Pear Emerald cut Cushion
0.50 ct 5.2 mm 6.5 x 4.5 mm 8.0 x 5.0 mm 5.8 x 4.2 mm 4.8 x 4.8 mm
0.75 ct 5.8 mm 7.3 x 5.2 mm 9.0 x 5.7 mm 6.6 x 4.8 mm 5.6 x 5.6 mm
1.00 ct 6.5 mm 7.7 x 5.7 mm 9.7 x 6.3 mm 7.2 x 5.3 mm 6.2 x 6.2 mm

A 0.50 carat pear is about 8.0 mm long, longer than a 1 carat round at about 6.5 mm across. So when two shapes share a ring, balance them by how big each looks on the hand, not by carats alone. Two stones also cover more of the finger than one: two 0.50 carat rounds side by side span about 10.4 mm, where a single 1 carat round is about 6.5 mm. Full tables are in our size guides for oval, pear, emerald and cushion diamonds, and the carat size chart for rounds.

How the two stones sit

  • Side by side across the finger. The two stones touch or nearly touch, like the emerald and pear above. The ring reads wide and bold.
  • One above the other along the finger. Like the oval and emerald, or the pear and emerald. The ring lengthens the hand and sits neatly beside other rings.
  • On the ends of an open band. Each stone sits on one end of a band that wraps around the finger, like the pear and oval. The most fluid of the three, with space between the stones.

As an engagement ring, or not

A toi et moi is an engagement ring with a history behind it: the ring most often linked to it was Napoleon's engagement ring. It carries the formality of a solitaire and looks like no one else's ring. Worn on the ring finger of the left hand, it says engaged. On the right hand, it is simply a ring she chose, for an anniversary, a milestone, or no reason at all.

Size and stacking

Every ring is made to order in her size, and resized free within 30 days. Two stones sit wider than one, so if she is between sizes, try both before deciding; our ring size guide shows how to measure a ring she already wears.

Stacking takes a little thought. The two stones of a toi et moi usually sit wider than the band, so a straight wedding band can leave a gap beneath them. A curved band shaped to the stones closes the gap. Or wear the band on the other hand, or on the next finger. Our guide to pairing a wedding band goes further.

What a toi et moi ring costs

The price follows the total weight of both diamonds and the gold. At Nivara, toi et moi rings start from around ₹52,000, and a pair of diamonds weighing 2 carats together starts from around ₹1,42,000, in 14k gold. Prices move with the gold rate. Frequently asked questions

What does toi et moi mean?

Toi et moi is French for you and me. In jewellery it means a ring with two stones set side by side on one band, with no centre stone between them. The design is often linked to the ring Napoleon Bonaparte gave Josephine de Beauharnais before their wedding in 1796.

Can a toi et moi ring be an engagement ring?

Yes. The ring most often linked to the design was an engagement ring, and a toi et moi carries the formality of a solitaire while looking like no one else's ring. Worn on the right hand, it is simply a ring she chose for herself.

Which diamond shapes go best together in a toi et moi?

Pear and oval, pear and emerald cut, oval and emerald cut, and pear and round are the classic pairings, and two ovals make a matched pair. A simple way to choose is to start from the shape she already wears in her earrings or pendant.

Should the two stones in a toi et moi be the same size?

They do not need to be, and equal weights rarely look equal. A 0.50 carat pear is about 8.0 mm long, longer than a 1 carat round at about 6.5 mm across. Balance the two by how big each looks on the hand, not by carats alone.

How much does a toi et moi ring cost?

The price follows the total weight of both diamonds and the gold. At Nivara, toi et moi rings start from around ₹52,000, and a pair of diamonds weighing 2 carats together starts from around ₹1,42,000, in 14k gold. Prices move with the gold rate.
