A cushion cut is a square or slightly rectangular diamond with softly rounded corners and a gentle, glowing sparkle in place of a sharp flash. A 1 carat cushion measures about 6.2 by 6.2 mm, close to the 6.5 mm of a 1 carat round. With no sharp points to catch, it suits a ring worn every day.
Why choose a cushion
- It is soft. Rounded corners give a pillow like outline and a calm, glowing light.
- It is easy to wear. A ring is admired for a day and lived in for years. A cushion has no sharp points to snag on a sleeve or a scarf, and nothing as exposed as the corners of a princess.
- It has presence. Face up, a 1 carat cushion fills about as much of the finger as a round of the same weight.
- It suits many settings. Solitaire, halo, hidden halo, three stone or toi et moi: the soft square takes them all.

Sizes are for a standard square cushion; an elongated cushion runs longer in one direction for the same weight, and the IGI report gives each stone's own measurements. Crushed ice or chunky facets
Modern cushions come in two styles. A chunky facet cushion has larger, more traditional facets that throw bold, clearly defined flashes of light and read as classic. A crushed ice cushion has smaller, more numerous facets that scatter light into a textured, constant shimmer. Neither is better; it comes down to bold flashes or soft shimmer. The hidden halo
The ring of small diamonds sits beneath the stone instead of around it. Face up it reads as a solitaire; turn your hand and the diamonds underneath catch the light.

Three stones

Settings and metal
A cushion asks less of its setting than a princess, but its corners still sit at the edge of the stone. Four prongs, one at each corner, leave most of the stone open to the light; a halo frames the whole outline; a bezel wraps it in gold.
