On average, for every one carat mined from the ground, up to 250 tons of earth are removed, 127 gallons of fresh water are used, billions of gallons of water are contaminated with acid mine runoff, 143 pounds of air pollution are emitted, and countless gallons of fossil fuels are consumed.
Lab grown diamonds avoid this environmental toll.
Lab grown diamonds are created in a lab by replicating the natural conditions under which diamonds form deep within the Earth's mantle.
Scientists use one of two main methods to grow diamonds -
High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)
In the HPHT process, a small diamond seed is placed in a growth chamber filled with carbon. The chamber is then subjected to immense heat over 2,700°F and pressure over 1.5 million pounds per square inch, melting the carbon. As the carbon melts, it forms a diamond around the seed, growing a full-sized gem in just a few weeks. This mimics the extreme heat and pressure found 90 miles below the Earth's surface where natural diamonds develop over billions of years.
Whereas in the CVD method, a diamond seed is placed in a vacuum chamber and exposed to a carbon-rich gas mixture heated to around 1,500°F. Microwaves or lasers ionize the gas, breaking down the carbon atoms which then bond to the seed, growing a diamond layer by layer. This process replicates how diamonds form from interstellar gas clouds.
Both HPHT and CVD create diamonds that are chemically, physically and optically identical to natural diamonds. The main difference is that lab grown diamonds are produced in a matter of weeks rather than billions of years. With their identical properties and lower environmental impact, lab grown diamonds provide an ethical, sustainable alternative to mined diamonds. As conscious consumers, we have the power to drive change. Every lab-grown diamond purchased is a vote for a greener future and a message to the industry that we demand more sustainable practices. Together, we can redefine luxury as not just beautiful, but also ethical and environmentally responsible.
So, the next time you find yourself captivated by a diamond's allure, remember that the true value lies not in its rarity, but in its ability to shine a light on a better way forward.
Choose lab-grown diamonds and let your diamond be a symbol of your commitment to a more SUSTAINABLE world.
