Marquise Engagement Rings: Designs, Sizes and Prices in India

Three Nivara marquise lab grown diamond engagement rings: a solitaire on a diamond band between two halo rings

Updated 4 October 2026

A marquise diamond is long and narrow with a point at each end, a shape that stretches the line of the finger. A 1 carat marquise runs about 11.2 mm long, against 6.5 mm across for a round. The two points are the part to protect, so the setting matters. Here are the designs, sizes and prices.

Why choose a marquise

  • It lengthens the finger. Set along the finger, the two points draw one long line, and the finger looks slimmer for it.
  • It runs long for its weight. At 1 carat a marquise is about 11.2 mm long, against about 7.7 mm for an oval and 9.7 mm for a pear, so it covers more of the finger than either.
  • It is unmistakable. Two curves and two points, a shape you do not mistake for anything else. The story goes that it was cut in eighteenth century France to echo the smile of a marquise, and its other name, navette, is French for little boat.
  • It keeps its fire. A marquise is cut with brilliant facets like a round, so it sparkles like one.

Along the finger or across it

A marquise can be set two ways, and each gives a different ring.

  • Along the finger, north south. The traditional way, and the one that does the most for the hand. The points lead the eye from knuckle to nail.
  • Across the finger, east west. Turned sideways, the stone lies across the finger like a long leaf. The ring reads wider than it is long, lower and more modern.

Hold your hand out and look at it, then try both on: the line that looks like yours is the right one. All of our rings are made to order, so if you have a direction in mind, ask at a private viewing.

Protecting the two points

Diamond is the hardest natural material, but hard is not the same as unbreakable. A sharp corner can chip under a hard knock, and a marquise has two of them, each at the thinnest part of the stone. It is the one thing to look at in a marquise ring, and a well made setting guards the points in one of three ways.

  • A prong over each tip. A prong, often cut as a small V, closes over the point and takes the knock in place of the stone. It is the most direct answer, and it keeps the whole outline in view.
  • A frame or bezel. Gold follows the outline of the stone and covers both tips.
  • A halo. A line of small diamonds in metal runs around the outline, points included, and makes the centre read larger.

When you try a ring, look at the tips first: each should sit inside a prong or under metal, not stand bare. Whichever setting you choose, take the ring off for the gym and heavy work, and have it checked from time to time. Lifetime prong tightening comes with every Nivara piece, so the prongs over the tips are looked after for as long as you wear the ring.

Marquise diamond sizes

Carat Length x width, about Diamond price at Nivara
0.50 ct 9.0 x 4.5 mm ₹25,000
0.75 ct 10.3 x 5.2 mm ₹37,500
1.00 ct 11.2 x 5.6 mm ₹50,000
1.50 ct 12.8 x 6.4 mm ₹75,000
2.00 ct 14.0 x 7.0 mm ₹1,00,000

Sizes vary slightly with the proportions of each stone. The table assumes a length to width ratio near 2 to 1. Prices are for the diamond alone, VVS clarity and E colour; the gold and setting are added depending on the design. Our marquise diamond size guide has the same table with more detail, and the carat size chart compares rounds.

Marquise, oval or pear

All three are long shapes that carry the eye along the finger. At 1 carat, from our own size guides:

Shape Length x width, about Length to width, about
Round 6.5 mm across 1.0
Oval 7.7 x 5.7 mm 1.35
Pear 9.7 x 6.3 mm 1.5
Marquise 11.2 x 5.6 mm 2.0

The marquise is the longest and slimmest of the group. Choose it for the long line and the two points. Choose an oval if you would rather have no point to guard: our guide to oval engagement rings has the designs. For a teardrop with a single point, see the pear diamond size guide.

Proportion, symmetry and the bow tie

Length to width sets the character of a marquise. Near 2 to 1, roughly 1.85 to 2.15, is the classic outline. Lower and the stone reads fuller and softer, higher and it reads longer and sharper. The IGI report lists the measurements of each stone, so the ratio is something you can check rather than guess.

The two points should sit on the same line, and the two halves should mirror each other. A small difference shows on a marquise, so look at the outline as well as the sparkle. Many marquise diamonds also show a darker band across the centre, shaped like a bow tie, where some facets return less light. It comes with long shapes, and a well cut stone keeps it as soft shading rather than a dark band. Every Nivara diamond is ideal cut, VVS clarity and E colour, and IGI certified. The best test is still your own eye: look at the ring in person and turn it under light.

Frequently asked questions

Does a marquise diamond look bigger than a round?

It looks longer. A 1 carat marquise measures about 11.2 by 5.6 mm, against about 6.5 mm across for a 1 carat round, so it runs about 1.7 times the length of a round along the finger. It is narrower than a round, so it reads as a long stone rather than a wide one.

Are marquise rings fragile? Do the points chip?

Diamond is the hardest natural material, but a sharp point can chip under a hard knock, and a marquise has two. A prong cut as a V over each tip, a gold frame or a halo covers them. Take the ring off for the gym and heavy work, and use the lifetime prong tightening that comes with every Nivara piece.

What is the best length to width ratio for a marquise?

Near 2 to 1, roughly 1.85 to 2.15, is the classic proportion and the one in our size table. A lower ratio reads fuller and softer, a higher one longer and sharper. The IGI report lists the measurements of the stone, so you can check the ratio, then judge it on your own hand.

How much does a marquise engagement ring cost?

Every Nivara diamond is priced at ₹50,000 per carat for VVS clarity and E colour, so a 1 carat marquise is ₹50,000 before the gold and setting. Our Amora 0.60 carat marquise solitaire starts from around ₹70,000 in 14k gold, and prices move with the gold rate.

Which way should a marquise sit on the finger?

Along the finger is the traditional way, and it lengthens the hand most. Across the finger, called east west, gives a wider and more modern line. Try both on at a private viewing and choose the one that looks like you.
