Diamond Earrings, and the Pair You Will Actually Wear

Earrings are the most worn and least considered category in fine jewellery. Most people own several pairs and reach for the same one every morning. That pair is almost never the one bought for a single big occasion, and understanding why is the whole point of this guide.

Start by deciding what this pair is for. Every subsequent decision follows from it.

Carat Weight, Per Ear and Per Pair

This is the most misread number in earring buying, and it is worth getting straight before you compare anything. Diamond stud earrings are usually described by total carat weight, meaning the two stones added together. A one carat pair is two half carat stones, one in each ear. It is not two one carat stones.

That distinction changes everything about how a pair looks and what it costs, so always confirm which figure you are being quoted. At Nivara we will state both without being asked, because a buyer who thinks they are getting a one carat stone in each ear and receives a one carat pair has been let down before the box is even opened.

As a practical guide to how size reads on the ear: below roughly a quarter carat per ear a stud is a discreet point of light, visible up close and subtle at conversational distance. Around a third to a half carat per ear is the range most people mean when they picture a diamond stud, clearly visible and still entirely wearable at work. Above three quarters of a carat per ear a stud becomes a statement and begins to carry noticeable weight.

Settings, and What They Do to Light and Security

Earring settings involve the same trade off as rings, between maximum light and maximum security, but the stakes are different. An earring is worn where it can catch on hair, scarves, sari pallus, headphones and phone calls, all day, and unlike a ring you cannot feel it slipping.

• Four prong. The least metal between the stone and the light. The brightest option and the standard for a classic solitaire stud.
• Three prong. A slightly more contemporary look, with the prongs reading as part of the design rather than as fixtures.
• Bezel. A rim of gold fully encircles the stone. The most secure setting we make for earrings, and the right choice if you sleep in your studs, wear a headscarf, or simply never want to check that they are still there.
• Halo. A ring of pave diamonds around a centre stone. It adds visible size and edge brilliance without adding centre carat weight, which is why it is popular for studs where a larger look is wanted.
• Cluster. Several smaller diamonds set together so they read as one larger point of light. A practical route to presence without a single large stone.
• Channel and pave on hoops. Stones sunk flush along the hoop, with nothing protruding to catch. The most durable way to run diamonds around a hoop that will be worn constantly.

Backs, Fastenings and Why They Matter More Than You Think

Nobody asks about earring backs and almost everybody should. The back is the only thing standing between a diamond and a drain.

• Push backs, sometimes called friction backs. Quick to put on and take off, comfortable, and the most common fitting. They loosen gradually with wear, so pinch and check them every few weeks.
• Screw backs. The post is threaded and the back screws on. Slower to fasten and considerably harder to lose. This is what we would recommend for a stud you intend to wear daily or sleep in.
• Hinged and click closures on hoops. The hoop closes on itself with an audible click. Convenient and secure, and the standard on well made diamond hoops.
• Lever backs on drops. A hinged lever closes behind the lobe, which makes accidental loss very unlikely on a heavier earring.

Weight, Comfort and the Lobe

Earrings are the one category where comfort genuinely limits design, and it is the constraint buyers discover last. A stud above roughly three quarters of a carat per ear begins to have real weight. A long drop earring pulls on the lobe over a full day, and a lobe that has carried heavy earrings for years stretches in a way that is very slow to reverse.

Some practical guidance we give in the showroom. If the pair is for daily wear, choose the lighter option and put the budget into cut quality rather than size, because a smaller ideal cut stone throws more light than a larger dull one. If the pair is for a wedding or a long evening, a drop is entirely reasonable, but try it on for a few minutes rather than a few seconds. And if a favourite pair already feels heavy by evening, a halo or cluster design will give you the same visual scale at a fraction of the weight.

Gold: Karat and Colour on the Ear

All Nivara gold is BIS hallmarked, in 14K or 18K. For earrings the practical difference is smaller than for rings, because an earring takes far less physical abuse than a ring does, so 18K is a comfortable choice here even for daily wear. 14K remains slightly harder and is a sensible pick if the pair will be worn through sport or sleep.

Colour matters more on the ear than most people expect, because an earring sits against hair and skin rather than against other jewellery. White gold recedes and lets the diamond do all the work, which is why it is the most popular choice for studs. Yellow gold reads warmer and shows beautifully against dark hair. Rose gold is the softest against the skin and the most contemporary. Matching, and When Not To

What we would gently discourage is matching everything at once. If you are wearing statement drops, let the neckline stay quiet. If you are wearing a substantial necklace, wear studs. How We Are Priced

A Nivara VVS E diamond is ₹50,000 per carat, the same rate for every buyer, stated plainly. Setting and metal are priced separately and depend on the design, since a pair of bezel set studs and a pair of pave hoops are not the same work and gold is weighed rather than estimated. There are no grade tiers, because there is no lower grade to sell.

Occasions

• Everyday and work. Studs, bezel or four prong, a third to a half carat per ear, in the metal you already wear.
• A first diamond purchase. Studs again. They are the piece most likely to be worn for decades and the easiest to build a collection around.
• A wedding, as guest or as bride. Drops or dangles, chosen against the neckline rather than against the outfit alone.
• A gift. Studs are the safest gift in fine jewellery, because they require no size, suit every face, and are almost impossible to get wrong.
• A second piercing. A smaller stud above a larger one reads deliberate rather than accidental. Buy them as a considered pair, not as leftovers.

Caring for Diamond Earrings

• Put earrings on last, after perfume, hairspray and makeup, and take them off first at night. Product build up behind a stone is the most common reason diamonds look dull.
• Clean them with warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush, brushing behind the setting where residue and skin oils collect. Rinse, then dry fully before storing.
• Check push backs every few weeks by pinching them gently. If a back slides off with no resistance, bring the pair in.
• Store the pair together in a soft pouch or a lined box rather than loose. Diamonds scratch gold, including the gold of your other earrings.
