Diamond pendants fall into a few design families. A solitaire is one stone. A bezel wraps it in gold. A halo rings it with small diamonds. A cluster gathers many into one shape. Floral, heart, symbol and initial pendants carry meaning. For everyday wear, an 18 inch chain places the pendant on or just below the collarbone.
Solitaire pendants
One diamond on a chain. The design every other pendant is measured against, because it goes with a work shirt, a kurta and an evening sari alike. Under half a carat gives a fine everyday sparkle; a carat and above becomes the focal point of an outfit.
Round solitaire
Round is the classic, and prongs leave most of the stone open to the light, which keeps it bright.
Thea round solitaire pendant, from around ₹83,000. One round diamond held in slim prongs, with the chain joined at either side so it sits centred, 0.70 carat.
Fancy shape solitaire
Pear, oval, princess, heart or emerald cut. A pear points downward and draws a soft line toward the neckline, which is why it suits V necks so well.
Mode pear solitaire pendant, from around ₹1,09,000. A pear diamond in three prongs, with two small pear diamonds set into the chain above it, 1.20 carat in all.
Bezel set pendants
A bezel wraps the diamond's edge in a smooth rim of gold. It protects the girdle, the thin outer edge of the stone, and has no prongs to catch on a dupatta or a knit. It lets slightly less light into the stone than open prongs, so the look is cleaner and more graphic. For a pendant worn every day, it is the practical choice.
Sol Ovelle bezel pendant, from around ₹1,11,000. An oval diamond wrapped in a smooth rim of gold, hanging from a split bail, 1.07 carat.
Halo pendants
A ring of small diamonds around a centre stone. The halo adds sparkle and frames the centre, which can make it look larger than its own weight. A halo pendant carries from daytime to an evening out without changing a thing.
Mira round halo pendant, from around ₹1,77,500. A round diamond in prongs, ringed by a halo of small diamonds, 2.22 carat in all.
Cluster pendants
Many diamonds set close together so they read as one larger shape. A cluster spreads its carat weight across a wider face, so it looks generous on the neck and sits flat and light.
Flora floral cluster pendant, from around ₹95,000. Round diamonds gathered into a flower shaped cluster and edged with smaller diamonds, 1.00 carat in all.
Floral pendants
Petals made of pear and marquise diamonds around a centre stone. A flower is soft enough for every day and has enough presence for a festive evening, and it pairs naturally with diamond studs.
Mode pear flower pendant, from around ₹1,10,500. Six pear diamonds open like petals around a small round diamond, 0.63 carat in all.
Heart pendants
A heart shaped diamond, or a heart drawn in small diamonds. It marks a birthday, an anniversary or simply a good year, and on a fine chain its outline reads at a glance.
Sneh heart solitaire pendant, from around ₹1,10,500. One heart shaped diamond, with the chain joined at either side, 0.90 carat.
Circles, symbols and initials
Circle pendants
An open circle of diamonds, with no beginning and no end. It is flat, light and catches light all the way round, which makes it one of the easiest pendants to layer.
Anek diamond circle pendant, from around ₹1,00,000. An open circle of round diamonds set edge to edge, 1.12 carat in all.
Infinity and other symbols
A symbol says something only she needs to explain. Our symbol pendants include the infinity sign, the Om and the cross.
Foreva infinity pendant, from around ₹90,000. An infinity sign traced in round diamonds and set into the chain, 0.77 carat in all.
Initial pendants
A letter in diamonds: her own initial, or the initial of someone she carries with her. It is the most personal pendant on this page, and it layers well above a solitaire.
Anek initial A pendant, from around ₹77,000. The letter A built from round diamonds, 0.80 carat in all.
Two stone pendants
Two diamonds of different shapes, set side by side or one above the other. Known by the French name toi et moi, you and me, the design marks two people, or two chapters of her own life.
Toi et Moi pear and emerald pendant, from around ₹65,000. A pear diamond and an emerald cut diamond set one above the other, 0.60 carat in all.
Which chain length for a pendant
Chain lengths are standard; necks are not, so treat these as a guide. A larger pendant also hangs a little lower, because its own drop adds to the chain.
| Chain length | Where it usually sits | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 16 inches, about 41 cm | At the base of the neck | Small pendants close to the face, open necklines, the top layer of a stack |
| 18 inches, about 46 cm | On or just below the collarbone | Most pendants and most necklines; the everyday length |
| 20 to 22 inches, about 51 to 56 cm | Below the collarbone, above the chest | V necks, higher necklines, the middle layer of a stack |
| 24 inches, about 61 cm | At the top of the bust | Wearing over a high neckline or a kurta, the longest layer |
Match the chain to the pendant, too. A light pendant sits best on a fine chain; a larger one needs a chain with a little more body so it hangs straight. On our pendant pages, the chain in the photograph is shown for display, and the product page says whether one is included.
Which pendant for which neckline
- V neck: a pear, a heart or a drop on an 18 to 20 inch chain, so it sits inside the V and continues its line.
- Round or crew neck: a round solitaire, a cluster or a circle that falls just below the fabric, with clear space around it.
- Off shoulder, strapless or sweetheart: the whole neckline is open, so a halo, a larger cluster or two layers have room.
- High neck or collar: a longer chain, 24 inches, worn over the fabric, or skip the pendant and let earrings lead.
- Kurta, sari blouse or salwar suit: look at the neckline first. On a plain one, a pendant on an 18 inch chain; on an embroidered one, a small pendant that sits above the work rather than on top of it.
Pendants for daily wear
A pendant worn every day should be secure, flat enough to sit still, and on a chain fine enough to forget. Bezel set and closely set pieces have the least to catch on. Take it off for workouts and gardening, clean it at home with warm water, mild soap and a soft toothbrush, and store it on its own in a soft pouch so it does not scratch other pieces.
Layering pendants
Start with one pendant as the hero and let the rest support it. Space the chains at least 2 inches apart so each layer reads on its own, for example 16, 18 and 20 inches. Keep the heaviest piece on the longest chain, and start with one gold colour before mixing yellow and white. A circle or an initial on the short chain and a solitaire below it is an easy first stack.
Choosing a pendant as a gift
A pendant needs no size, which makes it one of the safest surprises in fine jewellery. If you are unsure of her taste, choose a round solitaire on an 18 inch chain, in the gold colour she already wears; many of these pendants come in yellow, rose or white gold, and the product page lists the options. Frequently asked questions
What chain length is best for a diamond pendant?
An 18 inch chain, about 46 cm, is the classic pendant length: it sits on or just below the collarbone and works with most necklines. A 16 inch chain sits at the base of the neck, and 20 to 22 inches falls below the collarbone. Where a chain sits also depends on her neck and build, and a larger pendant hangs a little lower.
Which diamond pendant is best for daily wear?
A solitaire or a bezel set pendant on a fine chain, in a size she will reach for every morning. A bezel wraps the diamond in a smooth rim of gold that protects its edge and has nothing to catch on clothes. Take it off for workouts, and clean it at home with warm water, mild soap and a soft toothbrush.
Does a diamond pendant come with a chain?
Not always. On our pendant pages the chain in the photograph is shown for display, and the product page says whether one is included. If she will wear the pendant on a chain she already owns, ask us before you order and we will tell you exactly what comes with the piece.
How much does a lab grown diamond pendant cost?
At Nivara every diamond is priced at ₹50,000 per carat for VVS clarity and E colour, so a 0.50 carat stone is ₹25,000 in diamond value, with gold and setting added by design. The pendants on this page run from around ₹65,000 to around ₹1,77,500 in 14k gold, and prices move with the gold rate.
Which pendant suits a V neck?
A pendant that continues the line of the V: a pear solitaire, a heart or a drop, on an 18 to 20 inch chain so it sits inside the opening rather than on the fabric. A round halo or a cluster also works if the chain lets it fall clear of the neckline.
