Which Finger Is the Engagement Ring Worn On in India?

Updated 8 October 2026

In India, the usual place for a woman's engagement ring is the ring finger of the left hand, the finger beside the little finger. Some families, communities and regions follow the right hand instead, and neither is more correct. Follow your own family's custom. If you do not have one, wear it on whichever hand feels natural.

Left hand or right hand: the answer at a glance

Hand Where it is the custom Finger
Left The usual choice in India, and the custom across much of the Western world The ring finger, beside the little finger
Right Followed by some families, communities and regions in India, and traditional in some countries abroad, such as Poland and Russia The ring finger, beside the little finger

Neither hand is more correct. What matters is that the ring is worn the way your family wears it or, if there is no custom, the way you like it.

Why the left hand ring finger?

The custom comes from an old belief, found in Roman writing, that a vein or nerve ran from this finger straight to the heart. It is known as the vena amoris, the vein of love. It is not anatomy: blood returns to the heart from every finger, not through one special vein. But the belief gave the finger its meaning, and the left ring finger became the custom in many countries. In India it is the conventional place for an engagement ring, given at a proposal or put on at a ring ceremony.

Why some families choose the right hand

Practice in India differs by family, community and region. Some families put the ring on the right hand and others on the left, and each is following its own tradition. The same is true across the world: in Poland and Russia, for example, the right hand is the traditional one. We do not rank traditions, and you do not have to choose between them. If your family has a custom, follow it. If you are not sure, ask an elder, or the person who will wear the ring, before the day.

If your family has no custom

Then choose the hand that suits the way you live. A ring with a raised diamond meets door handles, keyboards and kitchen counters, and it meets them more often on the hand you use more. The left ring finger is the usual place, so it will look familiar to everyone around you. The right is just as good if it feels better to you, and you can move the ring from one hand to the other later.

If the ring is a surprise, a sister, a mother or a close friend can usually tell you which hand she is likely to wear it on, and which size. The wedding ring takes the same finger as the engagement ring, and our guide to engagement ring vs wedding ring explains how the two sit together.

What about astrology?

Some families also look at astrology when they choose a finger. That tradition applies most directly to coloured gemstones worn as a remedy an astrologer has prescribed. Our guide to which finger to wear a ring on covers what astrology says and the practical answer in full.

Find the size of that finger: your two hands differ

Your two ring fingers are rarely exactly the same size, so measure the finger the ring will actually sit on, not the one that is easiest to reach. If the ring is going on your right hand, measure your right ring finger. Our guide to measuring your ring size at home shows five methods. The paper strip is the most accurate: wrap it snugly around the base of the finger, below the knuckle. If your knuckle is wider than the base of your finger, size the ring so it passes over the knuckle comfortably.

Every Nivara ring is made to order, so you give us the size and we make the ring to that measurement. If the fit is not right, we resize any ring we have made, free, within 30 days of purchase, by up to two sizes. A band with diamonds set along it can usually be resized by only one size either way, so give us the size before we make it. Planning a surprise? Our guide to engagement ring sizes in India shows how to find her size without asking.

Frequently asked questions

Which finger is the engagement ring worn on in India?

The ring finger, the one beside the little finger. The left hand is the usual choice for a woman's engagement ring, and some families, communities and regions follow the right hand instead. Neither is more correct, so follow your family's custom.

Which hand does a woman wear an engagement ring on?

The left hand is the usual choice in India and across much of the world. The right hand is the custom in some Indian families and in some countries abroad, such as Poland and Russia. If your family has no custom, wear it on the hand where it feels natural.

Is the ring finger on my right hand the same size as the left?

Not always. The two fingers are rarely exactly the same size, so measure the finger the ring will sit on. Every Nivara ring is made to order, so tell us the finger when you order and we make the ring to that size. We resize any ring we have made, free, within 30 days of purchase, by up to two sizes.

Can I move my engagement ring to the other hand later?

Yes. Nothing about the ring ties it to one hand. Because the two fingers can differ in size, the ring may need a small change when it moves, so talk to us about resizing. Within 30 days of purchase, and up to two sizes, it is free.

How long does an engagement ring take to arrive for a ring ceremony?

The pieces listed on our website usually take 18 to 20 days to deliver, depending on the design. Every ring is made to order, so ask for the ready date of the exact ring you choose before you fix the date of the ceremony.
