An engagement ring marks the decision to marry. A wedding ring marks the marriage itself. The engagement ring usually comes first and is built around a centre diamond. The wedding ring usually follows as a slimmer band, plain or set with diamonds, made for every day. You do not need both. When you wear both, they share one finger.

What an engagement ring is
An engagement ring is given when two people decide to marry, at a proposal or at the ring ceremony that many Indian families hold before the wedding. It is the ring with the diamond everyone looks at, so it is usually built around one centre stone: a solitaire, a three stone ring, a halo. She can choose it herself, or the two of you can choose it together. Either way, it is the ring you will look at most.
What a wedding ring is
A wedding ring is the ring of the marriage itself, worn from the wedding day and made for every day after. That is why it is usually a band: low, smooth and easy to wear for years. It can be plain gold, or set with diamonds across the front, which is a half eternity band, or all the way round, which is an eternity band.
Which comes first in India?
The engagement ring. It arrives at the proposal or the ring ceremony, weeks or months before the wedding. The wedding ring, if there is one, comes at the wedding or after it.
In India a wedding ring is a choice rather than a requirement. At a Hindu wedding the rites centre on the pheras and the mangalsutra, not on a ring, so the rings from the engagement often stay the couple's rings. At a church wedding the exchange of rings is part of the service. Some couples add a band at the wedding. Others never do.
Which finger does an engagement ring go on, and the wedding ring?
The ring finger of the left hand, the finger beside the little finger. The wedding ring takes the same finger as the engagement ring, which is why the two need to sit well together. Some families and regions follow the right hand, and neither is more correct. If your engagement ring is on the right hand, the wedding ring follows it there. Our guide to which finger to wear a ring on covers the astrology and the practical answer in full.
Which goes on first, the engagement ring or the wedding ring?
The convention is the wedding ring closest to the hand and the engagement ring outside it: the band goes on first at the ceremony, and the engagement ring follows. Some prefer the reverse, with the engagement ring closest to the hand because it was there first. Others wear one ring at a time, the band through the day and the engagement ring for the evening. There is no rule, only what sits comfortably.
Do you need both?
No. A marriage does not require two rings. Couples handle it in four ways:
- One ring only. A solitaire is a complete ring on its own, and can be worn from the engagement through the marriage.
- Engagement ring first, band later. Add a band at the wedding, or years on, at an anniversary.
- Bands only. Some couples skip the engagement ring and exchange bands at the wedding.
- Both, chosen together. The two rings are picked as a pair, so they sit well against each other from the first day.
In many Hindu households the mangalsutra is the traditional symbol of marriage, so a wedding band becomes a matter of taste. Choose the rings you will wear.
How to wear and match the two
Match the metal. The two rings share a finger and rub against each other every day, so the same metal and karat keeps the wear even: yellow gold with yellow gold, white gold with white gold. Mixing two golds works when it is clearly deliberate.
Check the fit. A tall setting around a centre diamond can leave a gap against a straight band. A curved band can sit snug against a solitaire. The easiest way to see it is to bring the engagement ring and try the band on the same finger. Our guide to pairing a wedding band with an engagement ring goes through straight, curved and fitted bands.
Match without copying. For two partners, one shared detail is enough: the same gold, the same finish or the same diamond shape. Our guide to wedding ring sets covers his and hers bands, and how a set is priced.
Settle the size first. A band set with diamonds all the way round is harder to resize later than a half eternity or a plain band, so decide the size before you order.

Frequently asked questions
Which finger does an engagement ring go on, and which does the wedding ring go on?
The ring finger of the left hand is the usual place for both, with the wedding ring worn beside the engagement ring. Some families and regions follow the right hand instead. Neither is more correct, so wear them where they feel right, and keep the wedding ring on the same hand as the engagement ring.
Which goes on first, the engagement ring or the wedding ring?
The convention is the wedding ring closest to the hand and the engagement ring outside it, so the band goes on first at the ceremony and the engagement ring follows. Some wear the engagement ring closest to the hand because it was there first. There is no rule, only what sits comfortably.
Do I need both an engagement ring and a wedding ring?
No. A solitaire can be the only ring you wear, from the engagement through the marriage. Others add a band at the wedding or later, or exchange bands only. In many Hindu households the mangalsutra is the traditional symbol of marriage, so a wedding band is a matter of taste.
Should my wedding ring match my engagement ring?
It should agree with it rather than copy it. Choose the same metal and karat so the two wear evenly, and a band that sits flush against the setting of the centre diamond. The diamond shapes can differ. Bring the engagement ring when you choose the band so you can see them together on the finger.
Do both partners wear a ring at the engagement?
At a ring ceremony, rings are often exchanged both ways, so both partners wear one. After a proposal, one ring may be given, but a couple can choose rings for both of them. Nivara makes rings for him as well as for her, so you can choose the two together.
