A princess cut is a square diamond with sharp corners and brilliant facets, so it sparkles like a round inside a crisp, modern outline. A 1 carat princess measures about 5.5 mm a side. Its corners need protecting, so the setting should cover them, with a prong over each corner or a rim of gold.

A princess carries much of its weight in its depth, so face up it can look a little smaller than a round of the same weight: about 5.5 mm a side at 1 carat, where a round is about 6.5 mm across. Measured corner to corner, the same princess spans about 7.8 mm. The carat size chart shows rounds to scale.
Protect the corners
The four pointed corners are the part of a princess most likely to chip if the ring takes a knock, so the setting matters as much as the stone. Four prongs, one over each corner, is the classic choice. V shaped prongs wrap each point for a ring that is never taken off.
