India's New Diamond Naming Rule: What It Actually Means for Lab-Grown Buyers

Something changed in how diamonds are named in India. You may have seen a headline from Outlook Luxe in early 2026: "India's New Diamond Rule: Only A Natural Diamond Can Be Called A Diamond." If you own a lab-grown diamond, or are considering one, you deserve a clear-eyed read of what this actually means. Not spin, not alarm. Just the facts.

Here is the short version: a naming rule changed. The diamond did not.

What the Rule Actually Says

India's regulatory and standards body has issued a nomenclature guideline stating that in commercial and retail contexts, the word "diamond" without any qualifier now legally refers to a natural, mined diamond. Retailers and brands who sell lab-grown stones must use specific, disclosed language. Accepted terms include "lab-grown diamond," "CVD diamond," or "HPHT diamond." The unqualified word "diamond" on its own is now reserved for the natural variety.

This is a labelling rule. It governs what words appear on a tag, a certificate listing, a product page, or a retail display. That is the full scope of what changed.

It does not touch the physical world. It does not alter the chemical structure of a lab-grown diamond. It does not change how the IGI grades and certifies them. It does not change what the stone does when light enters it, or how long it will last, or what it means to the person wearing it.

Why This Rule Exists, and Who Pushed for It

The regulation exists because not every brand in the market was being transparent. Some were marketing lab-grown stones simply as "diamonds" (no qualifier, no disclosure) in ways that could lead a buyer to assume they were purchasing a mined stone. Brands like De Beers have pushed for this type of regulatory clarity globally. The intent is to ensure that when a consumer sees the word "diamond" standing alone, they know exactly what they are looking at.

Consumer protection built on clarity. On paper, that is the right outcome.

The regulation puts pressure on brands that relied on ambiguity. For Nivara, there is nothing to adjust. What Has Not Changed: The Science

A lab-grown diamond and a mined diamond are chemically identical. Both are pure crystallised carbon arranged in the same cubic lattice structure. Both register a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. Both have the same refractive index, the same brilliance, the same fire. No gemologist on earth can tell them apart with the naked eye. The only instrument that can distinguish them is a highly specialised spectroscopic device used in gemological laboratories.

The difference between the two is origin. One formed over billions of years under the earth's crust. The other was grown in a controlled laboratory environment over a matter of weeks, using either CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) or HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) methods. If you want to understand how lab-grown diamonds are created, the science is genuinely remarkable. Neither process produces an imitation. Both produce a real diamond.

The question of whether lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds has a definitive answer. They are. A naming convention issued by a regulatory body does not change the physics.

What This Means When You Are Shopping

If you are buying a lab-grown diamond today, one thing becomes more important: look for the qualifier. Any reputable retailer will now be required to name their stones accurately. The phrase "lab-grown diamond" is not a warning label. It is a disclosure that tells you exactly what you are getting: a real diamond, grown with precision, certified with rigour, priced without the extraction premium.

Here is what the qualifier tells you:

  • The stone is chemically and optically identical to a mined diamond. Same carbon, same crystal structure, same hardness.
  • It is IGI-certified. The International Gemological Institute grades lab-grown diamonds to the same 4C standards it applies to mined stones. The certificate is equally rigorous, equally respected.
  • It has a known and transparent origin. No mining. No conflict supply chains. No opacity about where it came from.
  • It represents better value at the same quality tier. You get more diamond for your investment. That is not a compromise. That is arithmetic.

The label "lab-grown" is information. It is not a diminishment. Any brand or salesperson who uses it as one is misreading the science and doing their customer a disservice.

IGI Certification: Still the Gold Standard

Nothing in this regulation changes the standing of IGI certification for lab-grown diamonds. IGI grades lab-grown stones with the same methodology it applies to natural diamonds, using the same 4C framework: cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. The certificate you receive for a lab-grown diamond from a rigorous retailer is a complete record of that stone's quality attributes.
