Can a jeweller tell if a diamond is lab-grown just by looking at it?
No. A lab-grown diamond is not an imitation of a diamond. It is a diamond, grown from a diamond seed instead of dug from the earth, with the same carbon crystal structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness, the same refractive index, and the same brightness and fire. There is nothing for the eye to catch, because there is no difference for the eye to catch.
A jeweller's 10x loupe does not change that. A loupe shows clarity: the tiny inclusions inside a stone. Diamonds of both origins can be flawless or included, so an inclusion tells you about a particular stone, never about where it came from. Thirty years behind a counter does not help either. This is a limit of the human eye, not of the jeweller.
How are lab-grown diamonds identified?
In a grading laboratory, with instruments built for exactly this. Two of them do most of the work. Spectroscopy reads how a stone absorbs and emits light across the spectrum, which reveals its trace elements and its atomic type. Deep ultraviolet fluorescence imaging lights the diamond from within and shows the pattern in which it grew.
That growth pattern is the tell. A diamond formed in the earth grows outward in octahedral layers over an immense span of time. A diamond grown by CVD builds up in flat, even layers. A diamond grown by HPHT forms in distinct sectors around its seed crystal. The pattern is locked into the crystal, it cannot be polished off, and it does not fade. The laser inscription, and how to check it
In practice, nobody in a showroom is running a spectroscope. They are reading the girdle. The girdle is the thin outer edge of a diamond, where the stone is at its widest, and IGI laser inscribes the report number there in letters far too small for the eye. Under magnification they are perfectly legible.
Checking it takes about a minute.
- Ask to see the girdle under magnification. A 10x loupe or the jeweller's microscope will bring up the inscription. Any jeweller should offer this before you ask.
- Match the number to the certificate. The number on the stone and the number on the IGI report must be the same. That is what makes the paper and the diamond one and the same object.
- Look the number up with IGI directly. IGI keeps every report it issues in its online report database. Enter the number and confirm the grades, the measurements and the origin match the paper in your hand.

Why disclosure matters
Because origin is a fact about your diamond, and facts about your diamond belong to you. Every serious grading laboratory states origin on the report, and any jeweller worth buying from states it plainly at the counter, unasked. What to look for when you are shown a diamond
You cannot judge origin with your eye, but you can judge everything that actually matters. These are the things to ask for.
- The inscription, matched to the report. Ask to see the number on the girdle and on the certificate, then verify it with IGI. Paper and stone should be one.
- Cut, and the precision of it. Cut is where a diamond earns its light. Look for an ideal cut, and for hearts and arrows, a pattern that appears only when a diamond is cut with near perfect symmetry.
- Colour and clarity you can name. Ask precisely what you are getting, not only the carat.
- How it handles light. The 4Cs tell you what a diamond is. They do not tell you how it behaves on your hand. A light performance report measures that: brightness, fire, and contrast.
- An origin stated without being asked. If you have to prise it out of the seller, you have learned something more useful than the answer.
