A promise ring marks a commitment between two people that comes before, or instead of, an engagement. An engagement ring marks the decision to marry. The difference shows in the ring: a promise ring is usually smaller and freer in design, while an engagement ring is built around a centre diamond.
What a promise ring means
A promise ring means whatever the two of you agree it means. For some it says: we are exclusive. For some: we will marry, when the time is right. For others it is a promise that has nothing to do with marriage at all. That freedom is the point of it. No ritual is required and no family has to be in the room.

Which finger does a promise ring go on?
There is no rule. Many wear it on the ring finger of the left hand, then move it to the right hand, or stack it with the engagement ring, when that day comes. Others choose the right hand or the middle finger from the start, to keep the left ring finger free. Can a promise ring become the engagement ring?
Yes, in two ways. A small solitaire is already an engagement ring in form, so it can simply be renamed the day you decide. Or it can be exchanged: every Nivara piece carries a lifetime exchange at 100% of its current gold and diamond value, so a promise ring can later go towards a larger solitaire. After the first 15 days, making charges and taxes are deducted from the exchange value.
