Solitaire earrings hold one diamond in each ear and are sold by the weight of the pair. A 1 carat pair carries 0.50 carat in each ear, about 5.2 mm across; a 2 carat pair carries 1 carat in each ear, about 6.5 mm. At Nivara every lab grown diamond is ₹50,000 per carat, gold and setting added.
Solitaire earring sizes, per ear
| In each ear | Pair total | Diameter, about | Diamond price for the pair at Nivara |

| 0.50 ct | 1.00 ct | 5.2 mm | ₹50,000 |
| 0.75 ct | 1.50 ct | 5.8 mm | ₹75,000 |

Diameters are for a well cut round brilliant and come from our diamond carat size chart. Every Nivara diamond is ideal cut. Prices are for the diamonds alone, VVS clarity and E colour; the gold and setting are added depending on the design. Read the weight on the label: per ear or the pair
Earrings are listed by carat total weight, the weight of every diamond in both earrings together. Halve it for each ear. A pair of 1 carat solitaire earrings holds two 0.50 carat diamonds, not two 1 carat diamonds. If she wants a full carat in each ear, she is looking for a 2 carat pair. On halo and hidden halo earrings the total also counts the small diamonds around or beneath the centre, so the centre stone is smaller than half the total.
Which size to choose
- 0.25 carat in each ear, about 4.1 mm: a bright point of light for every day, and the size for a second piercing.
- 0.50 carat in each ear, about 5.2 mm: the classic solitaire earring. Clearly a diamond across a table, quiet enough for a boardroom.
- 0.75 to 1 carat in each ear, about 5.8 to 6.5 mm: the size people notice when she walks into a room, still close to the ear.
- 1.50 carats in each ear, about 7.4 mm: for weddings and evenings, or for a woman who wears her diamonds large.
Carat measures weight, not width, so doubling the carats widens a round diamond by only about a quarter. A smaller lobe makes the same diamond look larger. The surest test is to try two neighbouring sizes, one after the other, in a mirror.
Solitaire earring shapes and their sizes
Round is the traditional choice, and its facets are cut to return the most light. Other shapes spread their weight differently, so at the same carat they measure differently on the ear.
| Shape | 0.50 carat in each ear, about | 1 carat in each ear, about |
|---|---|---|
| Round | 5.2 mm | 6.5 mm |
| Oval | 6.5 by 4.5 mm | 7.7 by 5.7 mm |
| Princess | 4.4 by 4.4 mm | 5.5 by 5.5 mm |
| Cushion | 4.8 by 4.8 mm | 6.2 by 6.2 mm |
These sizes come from our oval, princess and cushion diamond size guides. An oval worn upright draws a longer line down the ear; a princess reads crisp and modern.
Solitaire earring settings
With one diamond in each ear, the setting is the design. It decides how much of the diamond shows, how close it sits to the lobe and how it wears.
Four prong
Four slim prongs hold the diamond at its edge and leave the rest open, so light enters from every side. On a round diamond, four prongs make the outline read very slightly squarer.
Three prong and martini
Three prongs open more of the face than four, and the triangle of prongs gives the stud a sharper, more designed look. When the three prongs rise from a slim cone of gold beneath the diamond, the setting is called a martini, after the shape of the glass, and it lets the stud sit close to the lobe. With one prong fewer, each one carries more of the work, so have the prongs checked from time to time.
Six prong
Six prongs grip the diamond at six points, which lets each prong be finer, and they trace the round outline closely, so the diamond reads at its full width.
Bezel
A bezel wraps the edge of the diamond in a continuous rim of gold. It protects the thin outer edge of the stone, leaves nothing to catch on hair or a dupatta, and gives a graphic, modern look. The rim takes the colour of the gold, so a yellow gold bezel frames the diamond in warmth. It lets slightly less light into the diamond than open prongs.
Halo and hidden halo
A halo is a ring of small diamonds around the centre stone, which widens the face of the earring so the pair reads larger than solitaires with the same centre diamonds. A hidden halo sets the small diamonds beneath the centre instead: face on, the earring reads as a clean solitaire, and the extra sparkle shows from the side.

What solitaire diamond earrings cost
At Nivara the diamond is priced at ₹50,000 per carat, always VVS clarity, E colour and ideal cut, so the price of a pair follows its total carat weight plus the gold and setting. A pair with 0.25 carat in each ear carries ₹25,000 of diamonds, 0.50 carat in each ear ₹50,000, and 1 carat in each ear ₹1,00,000. The solitaire earrings on this page run from around ₹32,000 to around ₹1,10,500 in 14k gold, and every piece is also available in 18k. Two pairs of the same carat can differ in price because of the gold and the setting, so compare like for like.
Comparing solitaire studs across brands? Ask each one whether the weight is per ear or for the pair, which laboratory certifies every diamond, and whether the grade is the same on every piece. Our guide to the top lab grown diamond brands in India sets out eight questions to put to any brand.
The pieces on our website usually take 18 to 20 days to deliver, depending on the design. For a birthday or an anniversary, ask for the ready date of the exact pair before you order.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between solitaire earrings and diamond studs?
A stud is any earring that sits on the lobe on a straight post. A solitaire earring is a stud built around one diamond in each ear. A plain solitaire shows nothing else; halo and hidden halo versions add small diamonds around or beneath that one centre stone. A floral or cluster stud, with many diamonds of similar size, is a stud but not a solitaire.
Which setting is best for solitaire earrings worn every day?
Four prongs or a bezel. Four slim prongs leave most of the diamond open to light, so it stays bright, and they are the classic choice. A bezel wraps the edge of the diamond in a smooth rim of gold, which protects it and leaves nothing to catch on hair or a dupatta, at the cost of a little light. Both suit an office, a flight and a dinner in the same day.
What is a martini setting for earrings?
A martini setting holds the diamond in three prongs that rise from a slim cone of gold beneath it, so in profile the stud looks like a cocktail glass. The cone lets the stud sit close to the lobe, and three prongs show more of the diamond than four or six.
Which diamond shape looks biggest in a solitaire earring?
An oval. At 0.50 carat in each ear an oval measures about 6.5 by 4.5 mm against about 5.2 mm for a round, because it spreads its weight across a longer outline. A princess cut looks smallest across at the same weight, about 4.4 mm square, because it carries more weight in depth.
How much do solitaire diamond earrings cost in India?
At Nivara every diamond is priced at ₹50,000 per carat for VVS clarity and E colour, so a pair with 0.25 carat in each ear carries ₹25,000 of diamonds and a pair with 1 carat in each ear ₹1,00,000, with the gold and setting added. The solitaire earrings on this page run from around ₹32,000 to around ₹1,10,500 in 14k gold, and prices move with the gold rate.
