Diamond Stud Size Chart: What 0.25 to 2 Carats Look Like on the Ear

Diamond stud size chart from 0.25 to 2 carats in each ear, drawn to scale

Updated 27 September 2026

Diamond studs are sold by carat total weight: the weight of both earrings together. A pair of 1 carat studs holds two 0.50 carat diamonds, each about 5.2 mm across. Between 0.25 and 0.50 carat in each ear, studs are quiet enough for every day; from 0.75 carat in each ear they read as a statement.

Pair total In each ear Diameter, about Diamond price for the pair at Nivara
0.50 ct 0.25 ct 4.1 mm ₹25,000
1.00 ct 0.50 ct 5.2 mm ₹50,000
1.50 ct 0.75 ct 5.8 mm ₹75,000

3.00 ct 1.50 ct 7.4 mm ₹1,50,000
4.00 ct 2.00 ct 8.2 mm ₹2,00,000

Diameters are for a well cut round brilliant and vary slightly with cut proportions. Prices are for the diamonds alone, VVS clarity and E colour; the gold and setting are added depending on the design.

What carat total weight means

Earrings are listed by the combined weight of every diamond in the pair, written as ct tw, carat total weight. Halve it to find the stone in each ear. Our Thea round studs at 1.20 carat in all carry 0.60 carat in each ear, about 5.4 mm across. On halo and cluster studs the total also includes the small diamonds around the centre, so the centre stone is smaller than half the total.

Which size suits you

  • 0.25 carat in each ear, about 4.1 mm: a bright point of light. Right for every day, for a second piercing, and for anyone who wants diamonds to be noticed only up close.
  • 0.50 carat in each ear, about 5.2 mm: the classic everyday stud, clearly a diamond across a table, quiet enough for an office.
  • 0.75 to 1 carat in each ear, about 5.8 to 6.5 mm: a statement that still sits close to the ear. The size people notice when you walk into a room.
  • 1.50 carats and more in each ear, 7.4 mm and up: occasion studs, for weddings and evenings, or for someone who wears her diamonds large.

Earlobes differ, and so does taste. A smaller lobe makes the same stud look larger. The surest test is to try two neighbouring sizes on in person.

Why a larger stud does not look much larger

Carat measures weight, and weight sits in the depth of a diamond as well as its width. Doubling the carats widens the stone by only about a quarter: 0.50 carat in each ear is about 5.2 mm, 1 carat about 6.5 mm. Our diamond carat size chart explains why, and shows sizes up to 3 carats.

Ways to make studs look bigger

  • A halo. A ring of small diamonds around the centre widens the face of the stud.
  • A hidden halo. Small diamonds beneath the stone add sparkle from the side without changing the front.
  • An elongated shape. Oval, pear and marquise diamonds spread their weight across a longer outline, so they look larger than a round of the same carat.

Frequently asked questions

What size diamond studs should I get?

For studs worn every day, 0.25 to 0.50 carat in each ear, about 4.1 to 5.2 mm across, is bright without being loud. From 0.75 carat in each ear, about 5.8 mm, studs become a statement. Smaller earlobes suit smaller studs, and a second piercing suits 0.25 carat or less.

How big are 1 carat diamond studs?

A pair of 1 carat studs usually means 1 carat in total, so each earring holds a 0.50 carat diamond about 5.2 mm across. If you mean 1 carat in each ear, 2 carats in total, each round diamond is about 6.5 mm across. Always check whether a weight is per ear or for the pair.

Are 2 carat diamond studs too big?

A 2 carat pair holds 1 carat in each ear, about 6.5 mm across. It is a clear statement, still worn close to the ear, and easy to wear every day. A 4 carat pair, 2 carats in each ear at about 8.2 mm, is usually kept for occasions.

How much do diamond studs cost?

At Nivara every diamond is priced at ₹50,000 per carat for VVS clarity and E colour, so a pair with 1 carat in total carries ₹50,000 of diamonds before the gold and setting. Our Thea four prong studs start from around ₹38,000 for 0.50 carat in all, in 14k gold.

Do halo studs look bigger?

Yes. A halo of small diamonds around the centre stone widens the face of the stud, so a halo pair reads larger than solitaire studs with the same centre diamonds. Oval and pear studs also look larger than round studs of the same carat, because their weight spreads across a longer outline.
