How to Choose an Engagement Ring

An engagement ring is the piece of jewellery your partner will wear every single day. The decision is personal, not technical. This guide helps you make the right jewellery choices — metal, style, setting, and fit. For the diamond itself, refer to our Diamond Shapes Guide and Diamond Quality (4Cs) Guide.

Start With the Person, Not the Ring

Before looking at anything else, observe how they dress and what jewellery they already wear. Is it delicate or bold? Classic or contemporary? Yellow gold or silver-toned? The ring should feel like a natural extension of their personal style — not a departure from it.

Step 1: Choose a Metal

Metal Colour Best For
18K White Gold Cool silver-white (rhodium plated) Classic, versatile; the most popular choice
18K Yellow Gold Warm gold Vintage-inspired styles; warmer skin tones
18K Rose Gold Warm pink-gold Romantic and feminine; suits all skin tones
Platinum Silver-white (no plating needed) Maximum durability; naturally hypoallergenic

At Nivara, all engagement rings are crafted in 18K gold (white, yellow, or rose) and platinum. Your choice here sets the overall character of the ring before you consider anything else.

Step 2: Choose a Setting Style

The setting is the metalwork that holds the diamond and defines the ring's personality. Five styles cover most preferences:

  • Solitaire — One diamond, clean band. Timeless. The diamond is the complete focus.
  • Pavé / Micro-pavé — Small diamonds set into the band add brilliance and visual width.
  • Halo — A ring of smaller diamonds surrounds the centre stone, creating a larger visual presence.
  • Three-stone — Past, present, future. Strong visual weight and personal meaning.
  • Bezel — Metal wraps around the diamond's edge. Modern, minimal, and protective for active wearers.

Consider their lifestyle. Someone who works with their hands benefits from a lower-profile setting like a bezel or a simple solitaire. Someone who loves maximum sparkle will appreciate a halo or pavé band.

Step 3: Set Your Budget as a Range

Decide on a comfortable budget before entering a store or consultation. At Nivara, engagement rings typically start from ₹75,000 and go upward depending on the centre diamond's size and the setting complexity. Lab-grown diamonds give you significantly more for the same budget compared to mined diamonds — meaning you can access a larger, better-quality stone at the price point you are comfortable with.

Once you have a range in mind, our consultants will shortlist options that maximise what your budget can achieve. You don't need to understand diamond grading to walk in — that is our job.

Step 4: Get the Ring Size Right

Ring sizing can be done discreetly. Borrow a ring they already wear on the correct finger and bring it to the consultation — our team can measure it without them knowing. If you are unsure, slightly larger is always better. Resizing a ring down is straightforward; resizing up is more involved.

Standard Indian ring sizes run from 12–20. Most women wear between 14 and 17. Most men wear between 17 and 20.

The Nivara Consultation

At a private consultation — in-store or via WhatsApp — we present shortlisted diamonds alongside setting options, show you the actual stones, and guide the final decision. There is no pressure.
