The 4Cs of Diamonds: Cut, Colour, Clarity, Carat

The 4Cs of Diamonds: Cut, Colour, Clarity, Carat

The Four Cs: An Overview

The 4Cs — Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat — are the universal language of diamond quality. Developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and adopted by IGI and all major grading laboratories, they give every diamond a precise, comparable quality profile.

At Nivara, every diamond is IGI-certified and graded across all four Cs before it reaches you.

Cut

Cut is the most important of the four Cs — it determines how much light the diamond reflects and therefore how much it sparkles. Cut is graded Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, or Poor for round brilliants. Fancy shapes (ovals, cushions, marquise) do not receive a cut grade from IGI, but Nivara's team evaluates proportions for every shape we offer.

What to look for: Excellent or Very Good cut for round brilliants. For fancy shapes, look for well-proportioned length-to-width ratios and no "bow-tie" effect.

Colour

Diamond colour is graded on a D-to-Z scale — D is completely colourless (the rarest), Z has a visible yellow or brown tint. The colour difference between adjacent grades is subtle and often invisible to the naked eye in a mounted setting.

Grade Category What It Looks Like
D–F Colourless Icy white; the finest grade
G–J Near colourless Virtually indistinguishable from D–F when set; excellent value
K–M Faint Slight warmth visible in larger stones
N–Z Very Light to Light Visible tint; rarely used in fine jewellery

Nivara recommendation: G–H for the best balance of quality and value.

Clarity

Clarity measures the presence of internal inclusions and external blemishes, evaluated under 10× magnification. Most inclusions are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye.

Grade Meaning
FL / IF Flawless / Internally Flawless — no inclusions visible under 10×
VVS1–VVS2 Very Very Slightly Included — inclusions invisible except under magnification
VS1–VS2 Very Slightly Included — minor inclusions, not visible to the naked eye
SI1–SI2 Slightly Included — inclusions may be visible under close inspection
I1–I3 Included — inclusions visible to the naked eye

Nivara recommendation: VS1–VS2 for eye-clean stones at excellent value. VVS for those who want perfection on paper.

Carat

Carat is the unit of weight for diamonds. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Carat weight directly affects price — a 1.00ct stone costs significantly more than two 0.50ct stones of identical quality, because larger diamonds are rarer.

Because lab-grown diamonds are 40–70% less expensive than natural diamonds of equivalent quality, Nivara clients often choose to move up in carat while maintaining the same budget — getting the visual impact of a much larger stone.

How the 4Cs Work Together

No single C tells the full story. A 2ct diamond with poor cut will look dull and lifeless; a 0.80ct Excellent-cut stone with VS1 clarity and G colour will outshine it. The skill in selecting a diamond is in finding the right balance across all four Cs for your budget and aesthetic.

At every Nivara consultation, we walk you through the 4Cs of each stone in your shortlist — in person, under proper lighting, with IGI certificates in hand.
