Diamond Shapes Guide

Why Diamond Shape Matters

The shape of a diamond determines its silhouette, its light performance, and the overall character of the piece. It is often the first decision — and the most personal one.

At Nivara, we work with all major shapes in our lab-grown diamond collections. Every shape below is available IGI-certified in a range of cuts, colours, and clarities.

Round Brilliant

The most popular diamond shape in the world. The round brilliant has 57–58 facets precisely engineered to maximise light return, fire, and scintillation. It receives a Cut grade from IGI, making it the easiest shape to evaluate objectively. If you want maximum sparkle and the most universally flattering silhouette, round is the benchmark.

Ideal L/W ratio: 1.00 (perfectly circular)

Oval

The oval brilliant combines the light performance of a round with an elongated outline that makes fingers appear longer and slimmer. It is one of the fastest-growing shapes in fine jewellery. Look for length-to-width ratios between 1.30 and 1.50, and check for the "bow-tie" effect (a dark shadow across the centre) — Nivara's team evaluates every oval for this before recommending it.

Ideal L/W ratio: 1.35–1.50

Cushion

A square or rectangular shape with rounded corners and larger facets that create a soft, romantic sparkle. Cushion cuts have been popular for centuries and suit both vintage and contemporary settings. Available in "cushion brilliant" (rounder, modern) and "cushion modified brilliant" (more classic) cuts.

Ideal L/W ratio: 1.00–1.10 (square) or 1.15–1.30 (rectangular)

Princess

A square shape with sharp corners and a brilliant facet pattern. The princess cut is the second most popular shape globally and works especially well in solitaire and channel settings. The pointed corners are more vulnerable to chipping — a bezel or V-prong setting is recommended.

Ideal L/W ratio: 1.00–1.05

Emerald

A rectangular shape with step-cut facets that create a "hall of mirrors" effect — long, dramatic flashes of light rather than sparkle. The emerald cut is elegant and architectural. Because its large open table displays inclusions more readily, VS1 or better clarity is recommended.

Ideal L/W ratio: 1.30–1.50

Pear

A teardrop silhouette combining the round and marquise. Pears are striking as solitaires and pendants. The point should be oriented toward the fingertip for the most elongating effect. Check for symmetry: the point should align perfectly with the apex of the rounded end.

Ideal L/W ratio: 1.45–1.75

Marquise

An elongated shape with pointed ends at both tips. The marquise creates one of the largest-looking diamonds for its carat weight — its elongated silhouette covers more finger area. Prone to bow-tie effect; symmetry and proportion checks are essential.

Ideal L/W ratio: 1.75–2.25

Heart

The ultimate symbol of romance. Heart-shaped diamonds require exceptional skill to cut and are most impactful at 0.70ct and above, where the shape is clearly visible. A length-to-width ratio close to 1.00 gives the most balanced heart shape.

Ideal L/W ratio: 0.90–1.10
