The most common thing left unsaid is the simplest. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness, and the same brightness and fire as one formed in the earth. It is grown from a diamond seed rather than dug, and IGI grades it on exactly the same 4Cs. The land a diamond costs

Mining carries a real footprint. One carat of mined diamond disturbs close to 100 square feet of land. One carat grown in a controlled setting disturbs about 0.07 square feet, with far less energy and no landscape left behind. This rarely comes up in a showroom, and it is worth asking about.

What actually separates two diamonds

Here is the part most worth knowing, and the part least often explained. Two diamonds can read identically on paper and look nothing alike on a hand. What separates them is cut, and how the stone handles light.

The 4Cs tell you what a diamond is. They do not tell you how it behaves. A diamond's real beauty is its brightness, its fire (the flashes of colour), and its contrast (the crisp balance of light and dark that makes it look alive). A light performance report measures exactly this, beyond the 4Cs, and most counters will not offer you one.

Ask about the small stones, not only the centre

In a halo, a band or a set, the centre stone is graded and named while the surrounding stones often are not. That is where quality quietly disappears. Ask what colour and clarity the small diamonds are, and ask to see the certificate for the stone you are actually buying.

What to look for in any diamond you are shown

A diamond is easy to grade on paper and harder to judge in the light. Before you choose one, these are the things worth looking for.

  • How it handles light. Ask for a light performance report, which grades brightness, fire and contrast beyond the 4Cs.
  • Cut, and the precision of it. Cut is where a diamond earns its light. Look for an ideal cut, and for hearts and arrows, a pattern that appears only when a diamond is cut with near perfect symmetry.
  • Colour and clarity you can actually name. Ask precisely what you are getting, not only the carat, and for every stone in the piece.
  • A certificate that matches the stone. Look for an IGI report whose number is laser inscribed on the diamond itself, so the paper and the stone are one and the same.
