Diamond Necklace Designs: Tennis, Statement, Layered and Everyday

A graduated diamond necklace catching the light against bare shoulders

Updated 4 October 2026

Diamond necklaces come in seven designs. Bar and station necklaces carry a few stones along a fine chain for every day. Chevron and halo necklaces add a focal point. Y necklaces and layered strands add length and movement. Tennis necklaces set diamonds in one unbroken line and make the statement. Real pieces and prices follow.

One stone on a chain is a pendant, and our diamond pendant designs cover those. The necklaces below are the ones where the design runs along the chain itself. See every one of our lab grown diamond necklaces in one place.

Everyday necklaces: bar and station

A bar necklace sets a short row of diamonds at the centre of the chain, a line of light under the throat. A station necklace spaces single stones along the chain, so the light travels as she moves. Both are light and close to the skin, and they go with a shirt collar, a kurta or a saree blouse.

Bar necklaces

Noor round lab grown diamond station bar necklace on a fine yellow gold chain

Noor station bar necklace, from around ₹1,19,500. Nine round diamonds in a gentle curve at the centre of a fine chain, 1.30 carat in all.

Station necklaces

A bezel wraps each diamond in a thin rim of gold, which protects the edge of the stone and leaves nothing to catch on a dupatta or a knit.

Sutra round lab grown diamond bezel station necklace on a yellow gold chain

Sutra bezel station necklace, from around ₹1,35,000. Eleven round diamonds, each in its own gold rim, spaced along the chain, 1.55 carat in all.

Chevron necklaces

A chevron necklace gathers its diamonds into a V. The point falls at the centre of the neck and the arms follow the line of the collarbone. Stones that grow larger towards the point make the V read as one sweep.

Chevron lab grown diamond necklace of eleven graduated round diamonds on a yellow gold chain

Chevron necklace, from around ₹2,80,500. Eleven round diamonds in a V, the largest at the point and smaller up each side, 3.70 carat in all.

Halo necklaces

A halo is a ring of small diamonds around a centre stone. It frames the centre and can make it look larger than its own weight. Three halos in a row give a necklace a clear middle and a little width.

Elina lab grown diamond necklace with three round diamonds in halos on a yellow gold chain

Elina round halo necklace, from around ₹1,78,500. Three round diamonds, each in a halo of small diamonds, at the centre of a fine chain, 2.28 carat in all.

Y necklaces

The chain meets at a point and a drop falls from it, so the necklace draws the letter Y. The vertical line lengthens the neck and falls into the opening of a V neck or an open blouse.

Flora lab grown diamond Y necklace ending in a lotus shaped cluster of diamonds

Flora lotus Y necklace, from around ₹1,08,500. A fine chain that passes through a small ring and drops to a lotus shaped cluster of pear and round diamonds, 1.00 carat in all.

Mode lab grown diamond Y necklace with pear diamond petals and a pear drop

Mode pear petals Y necklace, from around ₹2,22,000. Pear diamonds set like petals climbing one side of the chain, with a long drop ending in a single pear diamond, 2.75 carat in all.

Layered necklaces

Three chains at three lengths is a look worth building, and our guide to layering diamond necklaces shows how, neckline by neckline. A layered necklace gives the same look as one piece, so there is one necklace to put on instead of three.

Elara lab grown diamond triple layered necklace with a marquise, a round and a pear diamond

Elara triple layered necklace, from around ₹2,90,500. Three fine chains at three lengths, each carrying a single diamond: a marquise, a round and a pear, 3.41 carat in all.

Tennis necklaces

A tennis necklace is a continuous line of diamonds, each in its own setting, worn close at the neck. It is the statement necklace, since nothing else on this page covers as much of the neckline. It is the same idea as the tennis bracelet, and our diamond tennis bracelet guide explains the settings. The total carats do not show the size of each stone: the same weight can be many small diamonds or fewer larger ones, so compare the count too.

Tennis necklace Total weight Diamonds Each diamond, on average From
Sutra tennis line 3.50 ct 79 0.044 ct ₹3,25,500
Sutra four prong 10.05 ct 161 0.062 ct ₹6,91,500
Sutra buttercup 10.10 ct 119 0.085 ct ₹7,00,500
Sutra oval station 7.60 ct 124 0.061 ct ₹7,01,500
Sutra graduated 15.12 ct 158 0.096 ct ₹9,37,000

Prices are in 14k gold and move with the gold rate. Every diamond is priced at ₹50,000 per carat before the gold and setting are added, so the price follows total carats and the weight of gold. That is why the oval station, which carries more gold, sits above the ten carat lines.

The classic line

The same size of diamond along the whole line. It reads as one thread of light and works from a morning meeting to a dinner.

Sutra round lab grown diamond tennis necklace of 79 diamonds with gold links at the sides

Sutra tennis necklace, from around ₹3,25,500. A line of 79 round diamonds across the front, with gold links continuing at the sides, 3.50 carat in all.

With a centre stone

A single oval sits at the centre of a line of round diamonds, so the eye has somewhere to rest.

Sutra lab grown diamond tennis necklace with a single oval diamond at the centre of a line of round diamonds

Sutra oval station tennis necklace, from around ₹7,01,500. One oval diamond at the centre of a line of round diamonds, 7.60 carat across 124 diamonds.

Graduated

The stones grow larger towards the centre and smaller towards the clasp, which gives the line a focal point without adding a pendant.

Sutra graduated round lab grown diamond tennis necklace

Sutra graduated tennis necklace, from around ₹9,37,000. 158 round diamonds growing larger towards the centre, 15.12 carat in all.

Which necklace for which occasion

Occasion Designs that work Why
Every day, office Bar, station, small halo Light, close to the skin, nothing to catch
Dinners, evenings Chevron, halo, Y A clear focal point at the neckline
Weddings, festivals Tennis, layered, Y with petals Hold their own against silk, embroidery and heavy necklines
A gift, unsure of her taste Bar or station Go with what she already wears

Which necklace for which neckline

  • Round neck: bar, station, chevron and halo necklaces all work, since the fabric sits close and gives the diamonds a plain backdrop.
  • V neck: a Y necklace, which continues the line of the V. A short choker works against it.
  • Boat neck: one tennis necklace worn close at 16 inches, in the open line the neckline leaves.
  • Saree blouse: one piece, a station or bar necklace or a single tennis line, so the silk and the diamonds each get room.
  • Kurta and salwar kameez: a layered necklace, or a bar necklace over a plain chain.

Our guide to layering diamond necklaces goes deeper on Indian necklines.

Necklace lengths

Necklaces follow standard names. Where one sits also depends on the neck and build, so treat these as a guide. Tennis necklaces are most often worn at 16 to 18 inches, close to the collarbone.

Name Length Where it usually sits
Choker 14 to 16 inches, about 36 to 41 cm Close at the base of the neck
Princess 17 to 19 inches, about 43 to 48 cm; 18 is the classic On or just below the collarbone
Matinee 20 to 24 inches, about 51 to 61 cm On the upper chest
Opera 26 inches and longer, about 66 cm and over Lower on the chest, often worn doubled or layered

Ask us the length of any necklace before you order, and try it on at a viewing, where we can check how it sits on you.

What a diamond necklace costs

At Nivara the diamond is priced at ₹50,000 per carat, always VVS clarity, E colour and ideal cut, so a necklace follows its total carat weight plus the gold. A necklace carrying 1 carat holds ₹50,000 of diamonds before the gold and design are added. The necklaces on this page run from around ₹1,08,500 to around ₹9,37,000 in 14k gold, and move with the gold rate. Our necklace and pendant price guide breaks it down by carat.

Wearing and keeping it

  • Close the clasp first, then check it, every time. Bring the necklace in if the clasp begins to open with less pressure than it used to.
  • Keep each necklace on its own. Fine chains tangle in a drawer, so store them flat or hanging one by one.
  • Put it on last, after perfume, hairspray and make up, and take it off for the gym and for swimming.
  • Bring it in for cleaning. Every piece comes with lifetime polishing, cleaning and prong tightening.

What comes with every piece

  • One diamond standard, whatever the budget: VVS clarity, E colour, ideal cut.
  • IGI certification, and on solitaires the report number laser inscribed on the stone, so the paper and the diamond are one.
  • 14k or 18k BIS hallmarked gold.
  • A lifetime exchange at 100% of the current gold and diamond value, and a lifetime buyback at 100% gold and 85% diamond value.
  • Lifetime polishing, cleaning and prong tightening, for as long as the piece is worn.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main types of diamond necklace?

Bar and station necklaces carry a few diamonds along the chain, chevron necklaces gather them into a V, halo necklaces ring each centre stone with small diamonds, Y necklaces drop a line from a point, layered necklaces hang several strands at different lengths, and tennis necklaces set diamonds in one continuous line. A pendant is different: one stone hanging from a chain.

Which diamond necklace is best for everyday wear?

A bar or station necklace on a fine chain. The diamonds sit close to the skin, nothing hangs low enough to catch on a collar or a dupatta, and a bezel set station necklace wraps each stone in a thin rim of gold. The bar and station necklaces on this page carry 1.30 and 1.55 carat in all, light enough to wear from morning to night.

What length diamond necklace should I buy?

Eighteen inches is the classic length: it sits on or just below the collarbone and suits most necklines. Sixteen inches sits at the base of the neck, tennis necklaces are most often worn at 16 to 18 inches, and 20 to 24 inches falls on the upper chest. Where a necklace sits also depends on the neck, so ask us the length of the piece you like and try it on at a viewing.

How much does a lab grown diamond necklace cost?

At Nivara every diamond is priced at ₹50,000 per carat for VVS clarity and E colour, so a necklace follows its total carat weight, with gold and design added. The necklaces on this page run from around ₹1,08,500 for 1.00 carat to around ₹9,37,000 for 15.12 carat, in 14k gold. Prices move with the gold rate.

How many carats should a tennis necklace be?

It depends on how she wears it. A line of 79 small diamonds at 3.50 carat reads as one fine thread of light for everyday and evenings. Ten carats and more is a statement for weddings and festivals. Total carats do not show the size of each stone, so compare the number of diamonds too.
