Diamond pricing is famously opaque. Ask five jewellers what a one carat stone should cost and you'll get five different answers, usually with a story attached to each. This guide is an attempt at the opposite. Transparent numbers, real variables, and honest explanations of where your money goes.
The headline numbers
For IGI certified lab grown diamonds in India, current retail pricing sits in these ranges.
- 0.5 carat solitaire ring, good quality. Around 35,000 to 60,000 rupees.
- 1 carat solitaire ring, excellent quality. Around 80,000 to 1.5 lakh rupees.
- 1.5 carat solitaire ring, excellent quality. Around 1.5 to 2.5 lakh rupees.
- 2 carat solitaire ring, excellent quality. Around 2.5 to 4 lakh rupees.
These are ballparks. Actual pricing depends on cut grade, colour, clarity, setting complexity, and metal choice. The same carat weight can vary by 40 percent between a basic stone and a premium one.
The four things that drive price
1. The 4Cs of the stone
Cut quality matters most, then colour, then clarity, then carat. An excellent cut one carat diamond costs significantly more than a good cut one carat diamond because the stone sparkles more and reflects light more completely.
Colour drops in price roughly 15 to 20 percent per grade, from D down to J. Clarity drops in price at each step, VVS1 is more expensive than VS1, which is more expensive than SI1.
2. Growth method and origin laboratory
CVD diamonds generally cost 10 to 15 percent more than HPHT diamonds of equivalent specification, because CVD produces higher clarity stones more consistently.
The laboratory that grew the diamond matters too. Leading Indian labs, particularly in Surat, produce lab grown diamonds that rival anything grown in the US or Europe. Diamonds from less rigorous facilities trade at lower prices and, in our view, aren't worth the saving.
3. The setting
Setting is the metalwork that holds the diamond. A simple solitaire setting in 18K gold adds 15,000 to 25,000 rupees to the cost of the stone. A complex halo or pavé setting can add 40,000 to 80,000 rupees. Platinum settings cost more than gold settings by a meaningful margin.
BIS hallmarked 18K gold, which all Nivara pieces use, guarantees the gold content and weight. Cheaper stores sometimes use 14K or un hallmarked metal, which affects both longevity and honest pricing.
4. The brand and the buying experience
This is where price comparisons get uncomfortable. The same 1 carat IGI certified lab grown diamond in an 18K gold solitaire can cost 90,000 rupees from a discount online seller and 1.4 lakh from a brand like Nivara.
What does the extra 50,000 rupees buy you?
- Physical showrooms where you can see the stone before you buy
- Staff trained to explain and demonstrate the 4Cs honestly
- Lifetime buyback and exchange programs
- BIS hallmarked gold, not cheap alloy
- Bespoke customisation if nothing off the shelf is quite right
- After sale servicing, resizing, maintenance, stone tightening
- A brand that will still exist when you want to upgrade in five years
Some buyers are happy to skip all of this and buy the cheapest stone online. Most of our customers, having experienced both, prefer the alternative. Neither is wrong. What's wrong is jewellers pretending these differences don't exist and charging brand prices for discount service.
Lab grown vs natural diamond pricing
For equivalent 4C specification, lab grown diamonds cost roughly 60 to 80 percent less than natural diamonds. If you want to understand exactly what's identical and what's different between the two, our lab grown vs natural diamond comparison covers it without a sales angle.
Here's a concrete example. A 1 carat natural diamond of F colour, VS1 clarity, excellent cut, retails in India for around 3 to 4 lakh rupees. The same specification lab grown diamond retails for around 90,000 to 1.3 lakh rupees.
This isn't because lab grown diamonds are lower quality. They aren't. It's because natural diamond pricing carries the cost of mining, multi tier distribution, and a century of scarcity marketing. Lab grown pricing reflects what it actually costs to create a diamond plus reasonable margin.
For a fixed budget, lab grown delivers more diamond. For a fixed size, lab grown saves meaningful money. Both propositions are honest.
How Nivara prices
We price in a specific way. We don't inflate artificially, then discount theatrically. Every piece on our website and in our showrooms shows the real price. No MRP games. No countdown timers. No "today only" urgency.
Our pricing includes the stone, the setting, BIS hallmarked 18K gold, IGI certification, laser inscription, Nivara's lifetime buyback and exchange, and the buying experience. We don't undercut discount sellers because we don't compete with them. We compete with luxury brands by offering better value and cleaner transparency.
If you ever find a Nivara equivalent piece elsewhere at the same quality specification for meaningfully less, we want to know. Tell us. We'll look at it honestly.
What shouldn't affect your price
A few warning signs that a jeweller is overcharging or underdelivering.
- "Making charges" above 18 percent for simple settings. Anything higher and you're paying for the store's rent, not craftsmanship.
- Vague certification. Any diamond above 0.3 carat should come with IGI or GIA certification, not "our own lab" certification.
- Un hallmarked gold. Always ask for BIS hallmark. Always check the hallmark stamp.
- Pressure to decide today. A good jeweller knows you'll come back.
- Discounts that look too good. A 70 percent "festival discount" usually means the base price was inflated to begin with.
The short version
For a 1 carat excellent quality IGI certified lab grown diamond in an 18K gold solitaire setting, expect to pay 80,000 to 1.5 lakh rupees at a reputable brand. Below this range, you're probably compromising on the stone, the gold, or the after sale service. Above this range, you're paying for branding that may or may not matter to you.
Nivara sits in the honest middle. Premium materials, premium service, real prices, no theatre.
