Diamond Eternity Rings: Full, Half and When to Give One

Updated 4 October 2026

An eternity ring is a band of diamonds that runs on without a break: a circle with no beginning and no end. A full eternity sets stones all the way round. A half eternity sets them across the top, with plain gold below. Full cannot be resized like a plain band; half usually can, and is easier to wear.

Full eternity or half eternity

This is the choice that matters most. The stone shape, the width and the carat weight can all be settled around it.

Full eternity Half eternity
Where the diamonds sit All the way round the band Across the top, with plain gold beneath
Which way up Either, there is no wrong side Diamonds should face up, so it needs a snug fit
Resizing Not like a plain band, as there is no plain gold to cut Usually possible, as plain gold sits at the back
Beside another ring Diamonds on every side meet the ring next to it The plain underside sits smooth beside another ring
Price More diamonds, so a higher price at the same stone size Fewer diamonds, so a lower price at the same stone size
Best for The unbroken circle, once you are sure of your size Every day wear, stacking beside a ring, or a hand that may change

You may also see a three quarter eternity: diamonds most of the way round, with a short plain section at the back. It sits between the two.

Can you resize an eternity ring?

You will wear this ring for decades, and the hand it sits on will change. That is the practical case for thinking about size before you think about sparkle.

A jeweller resizes a ring by cutting the band at the back, adding or removing a little gold and joining it again. On a half eternity that cut falls in plain gold, so resizing is usually straightforward. On a full eternity there is no plain gold: the cut would run through the stones, so a resize means taking stones out and setting them again. Our ring resizing guide explains why this can cost more than the original ring, and why a remake is often the better answer. With a full eternity the work happens before you order.

  • Measure when your hands are warm. Cold fingers read small, so measure towards the end of the day, and again on a second day to be sure. Our ring size calculator takes a minute, and we can measure you at a showroom or on a video consultation.
  • Mind the width. A wide band fits snugger than a slim one of the same size. If you fall between sizes on a wide band, ask us which way to go.
  • Try it beside the ring you will wear it with. Two rings on one finger change how each one fits.
  • If you expect your fingers to change, choose a half eternity. It gives you room to adjust later.

Your eternity ring can be made in your size, to the nearest half Indian size. Resizing within 30 days of purchase is included, and if a full eternity needs a significant change, we will tell you whether a partial rebuild is the better route before any work begins.

How to wear an eternity ring

  • Beside an engagement ring. Bring the engagement ring with you. A straight band lies flush against a low setting and leaves a gap under a high one; a curved band nests around it. Our guide to pairing a band with your engagement ring goes through it style by style.
  • As the wedding band. An eternity ring is a style, not an occasion, so it works as the band you are married in.
  • As the engagement ring. Some couples choose an eternity ring as the engagement ring itself. There is no centre stone to choose, and the circle says it on its own. If you would rather see centre stones first, browse lab grown diamond engagement rings.
  • On its own. On the right hand, or on any finger you like, it is a ring without a rule attached to it.

When you stack, one familiar order from the base of the finger outward is the wedding band, then the engagement ring, then the eternity ring. It is a convention, not a rule.

When to give an eternity ring

The meaning is in the shape: a circle with no beginning and no end, so the ring stands for love that carries on. That makes it a ring for continuing as much as for beginning.

There is no fixed moment. A milestone anniversary is the classic one, and the unbroken circle suits a long marriage well. A birth, a promotion, or the day you decide the years should be marked all work too. She can choose it herself, you can choose it together, or one of you can surprise the other; the circle means the same. Nothing says it has to be given at all: you can buy your own.

Our anniversary gift guide matches pieces to years, with an eternity band at five and a full circle at ten, as ideas rather than rules.

What an eternity ring costs

At Nivara the diamond is ₹50,000 per carat, always VVS clarity, E colour and ideal cut, and the gold and setting are added. That makes the price follow the number and size of the stones: a 0.75 carat band carries ₹37,500 of diamond before the gold. A half eternity has fewer diamonds than a full eternity of the same stone size, so it costs less. Every piece is in 14k or 18k gold, and prices move with the gold rate.

What comes with every piece

  • One diamond standard, whatever the budget: VVS clarity, E colour, ideal cut.
  • IGI certification, and on solitaires the report number laser inscribed on the stone, so the paper and the diamond are one.
  • 14k or 18k BIS hallmarked gold.
  • A lifetime exchange at 100% of the current gold and diamond value, and a lifetime buyback at 100% gold and 85% diamond value.
  • Lifetime polishing, cleaning and prong tightening, for as long as the piece is worn.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a full and a half eternity ring?

A full eternity has diamonds set all the way round the band, so there is no wrong way up. A half eternity has them across the top and plain gold beneath, which makes it easier to resize and smoother against the finger beside it. Full is the purer circle; half is the easier ring to live in.

Can an eternity ring be resized?

A half eternity usually can, because the jeweller cuts the plain gold at the back. A full eternity cannot be resized like a plain band: there is no plain gold, so resizing means removing and resetting stones. Get the size right before you order. At Nivara, resizing within 30 days of purchase is included, and on a full eternity we will tell you honestly whether a partial rebuild is the better route before any work begins.

Which finger do you wear an eternity ring on?

Whichever you like. The ring finger beside an engagement ring or wedding band is the usual place, and an eternity ring also looks right on its own, on the other hand, or on the middle finger. A half eternity should fit snugly so the diamonds stay on top.

When do you give an eternity ring?

There is no rule. A milestone anniversary is the classic moment; a birth, a personal milestone or the wedding itself works just as well. Our anniversary guide suggests a band at five years and a full circle at ten, as ideas rather than rules. And nobody has to wait to be given one: buying your own is reason enough.

How much does a diamond eternity ring cost at Nivara?

Every Nivara diamond is priced at ₹50,000 per carat for VVS clarity and E colour, with the gold and setting added, so the price follows the number and size of the stones. Our Foreva cushion half eternity, 0.75 carat in all, starts from around ₹55,000 in 14k gold, and our Foreva scalloped full eternity, 1.05 carat in all, from around ₹64,000. Prices move with the gold rate.
