A diamond doesn't ask for much. A little attention, a few small habits, and it rewards you with decades of sparkle. Here's how to take care of your Nivara pieces so they stay as beautiful as the day you brought them home.
Why diamonds need care at all
Diamonds are the hardest natural or lab grown substance known. They won't scratch in daily wear. What they will do, though, is collect oils, soap residue, hand cream, and microscopic debris. These films dull the diamond's brilliance without damaging the stone.
A dull diamond isn't a problem with the diamond. It's a film on top of it. Clean the film, and the sparkle returns completely.
The simple weekly clean
This takes four minutes and does 80 percent of the work.
- Fill a small bowl with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap. Avoid anything with bleach, chlorine, or harsh detergents.
- Soak the piece for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Use a soft bristled toothbrush, one you've never used for teeth, to gently scrub around and behind the stone. The back of the diamond collects the most residue.
- Rinse in clean warm water. Use a colander or close the drain to avoid heartbreak.
- Pat dry with a soft, lint free cloth. A microfibre cloth works perfectly.
That's the whole routine. Do this once a week if you wear the piece daily, once a fortnight if you wear it occasionally.
The deeper monthly clean
Every four to six weeks, go slightly deeper.
After the warm water soak, use a cotton swab dipped in a 50/50 mix of water and isopropyl alcohol. Gently clean around the prongs and under the stone. Isopropyl alcohol dissolves oil films that water alone can't reach.
Rinse thoroughly and dry as before. This restores the sparkle to its original brilliance.
What to avoid
- Harsh chemicals. Bleach, chlorine, and strong detergents can damage gold and metal settings over time. Take jewellery off before swimming pools and jacuzzis.
- Ultrasonic cleaners at home. These are fine for solid pieces but can loosen prong settings on rings with pavé or halo details. Let a professional handle ultrasonic cleaning.
- Abrasive cloths or pastes. Anything marketed as "silver polish" or "jewellery polish" paste contains tiny abrasives that scratch soft metals. Don't use them on gold or platinum.
- Wearing to the gym. Sweat is slightly acidic and wears on metal over time. Weightlifting can also bend thin bands.
- Cooking with rings on. Oils, doughs, and vegetable residues lodge into settings and trap bacteria.
- Applying lotion, sunscreen, or perfume with rings on. These are the biggest culprits of diamond dullness. Apply, wait two minutes, then put jewellery on.
Storage
Store each piece separately. Diamonds can scratch other diamonds, and they'll definitely scratch softer stones like emeralds, pearls, or opals.
The original Nivara box works perfectly. Individual soft pouches or a jewellery box with padded compartments work equally well. Keep pieces away from direct sunlight and from humid bathrooms over long periods.
If you travel frequently, invest in a small jewellery roll. They protect pieces from tangling and scratching, and they fit easily into a carry on.
When to bring it in for professional service
Every six to twelve months, bring your piece to the showroom for a professional check. Here's what we do.
- Prong inspection. We check whether the prongs holding the stone have worn down or loosened. Prongs can thin over years of wear, and a loose prong risks losing the stone.
- Ultrasonic deep clean. Professional ultrasonic machines clean in places a toothbrush can't reach.
- Rhodium replating. White gold pieces plated in rhodium will dull slightly over two to three years. Replating restores the bright white finish.
- Settings tightening. Small stones in pavé or halo settings occasionally loosen. A jeweller's loupe catches this before a stone falls out.
- Polish refresh. The metal surface can develop micro scratches over years. A gentle polish restores the original finish.
Nivara offers all of this as part of our lifetime service promise. There's no charge for routine checks. Bring the piece in, we'll look after it.
If something goes wrong
A stone comes loose. A prong bends. A chain link breaks. These things happen, especially to pieces worn daily for years.
Don't panic. Don't try DIY fixes with glue or pliers. Put the piece in a secure envelope, take a photo, and bring it to us or send it in. Our repair team handles nearly every issue, and most fixes take days, not weeks.
For pieces under the Nivara lifetime service promise, most repairs come at no charge.
Daily wear, daily pleasure
